Mill-Qamar sal-Qabar – Miriam Cauchi & Alex Vella Gregory
Mill-Qamar sal-Qabar is a recital of contemporary Maltese works by composer Alexander Vella Gregory. The title comes from the first work on the programme, a song cycle for soprano and piano written by Alexander Vella Gregory, which brings together different Maltese literary texts from the Arab Period till the Second World War. This work, written especially for soprano Miriam Cauchi, consists of eight songs by different authors, some of which are not well known, spanning eight centuries of Maltese literary tradition, including the ‘Kantilena’ by Pietru Caxaro (15th century) and Bonamico’s ‘Mejju Ġie bil-Ward u Żahar’ (17th century). The second work on the programme is Knejjes IV, the fourth and final instalment of a piano cycle inspired by the churches of Valletta. The two works were premiered by the two performers presented here on 27th February 2015 at the Church of St Augustine, Valletta to critical acclaim.
